Institute of Oncology Research (IOR)
The Institute of Oncology Research (IOR), located in Bellinzona (Switzerland) and directed by Prof. Andrea Alimonti, is affiliated to the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and hosts over 100 researchers from around the world. These researchers are engaged in basic and translational oncology research, with a particular focus on cancer biology, genomics, molecular oncology, and experimental therapies.
Together with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), the IOR is a member of the Bellinzona Institutes of Science (Bios⁺), a non-profit association founded in July 2021 that aims to promote, support, and coordinate the scientific research and teaching activities of its members.
The quality of the research conducted at the IOR is demonstrated by the magnitude of publications in high-impact scientific journals, as well as the competitive funding, awards, and scholarships granted to its researchers at both national and international level.

History and milestones
2003
Establishment of the IOR
The IOR was founded in 2003 as the Laboratory of Experimental Oncology and as part of the Research Division of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI) under the leadership of Prof. Carlo Catapano.
Since its establishment, the IOR has continued to expand, strengthening its research capabilities and activities.
2011
Establishment of the IOR Foundation
In September 2011, the Institute became independent and is still managed administratively by the Foundation for the Institute of Oncology Research (FIOR).
2017
Affiliation to USI
As of January 2017, the Canton of Ticino approved the affiliation of the IOR as an academic institute within the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI).
2021
Establishment of Bios+
The IOR, together with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), became a member of the Bellinzona Institutes of Science (Bios+) in July 2021.
